Cruises 2023: Best New Ships, Itineraries Around the World

newest cruise ships 2023

Deputing in August in the Mediterranean, the 728-passenger Silver Nova will be the largest ship in the fleet of ultra-luxury brand Silversea. An expanded pool area is designed for optimum views from cushy lounge chairs, and the ship will boast 10 bars and lounges and 8 restaurants—including S.A.L.T., with a focus on culinary education and local food culture. The recently renewed Swan Hellenic brand will add to its current fleet of two new ships with yet another. SH Diana will differ some from her predecessors as a Polar Class 6 ship, accommodating 192 guests and 141 staff. Double-occupancy cabins, including 11 suites, will offer 24/7 in-room dining, and will measure about 215 and 505 square feet. And the Swan Restaurant, Club Lounge and Pool Bar & Grill will make up another three dining options.

By definition, small ships hold fewer than 1200 passengers, usually making the cruise experience more intimate with more individualized service. Euribia has been procaimed as the industry's most environmentally advanced ship to date being MSC's second newbuild designed to be LNG-powered (liquified natural gas). MSC Euribia differs from others in the fleet with her distinctive exclusive hull artwork design by Alex Flaemig/Undercover Design, who were selected via an international online contest. Dining options include two main restaurants, speciality dining options, and a more casual bistro style café. Guests can sit back, relax and enjoy a drink in one of her four bars, lounges and pub. Entertainment includes a tiered main theatre, The Palladium, casino, card room, library, and craft studio.

If you are a regular reader, or follow me on social media, you will know that I am obsessed with Celebrity Cruises, and in particular their last ship, Celebrity Beyond. Having sailed on her in 2022, I felt that she would be a hard act to follow, but I think Celebrity may have managed to top their best with Celebrity Ascent, which debuted in early December 2023. Artists were invited to enter a competition to create the artwork adorning the entire hull and Alex Flamig won with his striking marine-themed design reflecting the line’s commitment to the environment. While pricing and booking are not yet available for the Resilient Lady, the cost will include a room, Wi-Fi, and meals from every restaurant onboard, according to the same source.

At just 67,000 gross tons and a guest capacity of only 1,200, there’s no denying that Oceania’s Vista is small. If you’re looking for a more intimate cruising experience, with fewer crowds and more peace and quiet, you’ll find it here. An adults-only ship and the ninth cruise ship for Viking Cruises, Viking Saturn is an ocean ship, but is small enough that it can dock at ports where larger cruise ships just can’t.

In all cases, the new ships that are on the way for 2023 are already available for booking — and are indeed booking up fast. The year will also bring the first new ship in nearly a decade from upscale line Oceania Cruises, to be called Vista, as well as the first of a new class of ship for luxury line Silversea Cruises, to be called Silver Nova. “And if someone has cruised before–or considers themselves an avid cruiser–we hope this list helps introduce them to new options, whether an entirely new line or new possibilities offered by some of their favorites. The delay of Brilliant Lady has had an impact across the fleet as Virgin Voyages attempt to reshuffle sailings to minimise disruption as much as possible.

Some of the new tech that will help it get there includes Climeon, units that use heat from the ship’s engines to generate a portion of the electricity on board (which decreases fuel demand). The smart bracelet that unlocks passengers’ cabin doors is made of recycled plastic. Albatros Expeditions will expand its fleet with Ocean Albatros — sister ship to Ocean Victory and another of SunStone Ships’ signature X-Bow-equipped expedition ships — in May 2023. Sailing to the Arctic and Antarctica, it will be rated with a hull strength of Polar Class 6 and contain 95 staterooms and suites, a dozen of which will be dedicated to solo travelers (sans a single supplement). Thanks to plenty of ship orders made in advance of the pandemic, there are more than a dozen ocean newbuilds on the horizon. Designed with the yachting lifestyle in mind, Explora I offers just over 450 balcony suites, with each boasting 377 square feet of space.

Originally due to launch back in August 2022, Virgin Voyages made the decision to postpone her debut until May 2023 (see my related article here). When not exploring, guests can enjoy Al fresco dining beside a heated outdoor pool, or relaxing in the Observation Lounge or The Club Lounge. Brits will be among the first to get on board this new cruise ship as it will leave Southampton on a maiden voyage crossing the Atlantic to sunnier climes. Sip tempting hand-crafted cocktails in the multi-venue restaurant, bar and entertainment area Eden or hang out on the Magic Carpet (pictured). The glass-enclosed platform is on the outside of the ship and a highlight is a special dinner held there once or twice per cruise.

“Seven Seas Grandeur” from Seven Seas Cruises

The ship embarks on this journey for the first time in December 2023, and rooms onboard will range from interior staterooms with no windows to balcony suites, according to the website. Virgin Voyages is adding a new member to its class of luxury adult-only "lady ships" in 2023. With a similar layout to the 2021 Scarlet Lady ship, the forthcoming Resilient Lady will also only be available to passengers 18 and up.

The relationship between ship size and luxury

While the cruise line hasn’t given us many peaks behind the curtain just yet, it promises that there’s a lot of fun yet to be announced. Originally, the Icon-class ships were expected to be bigger than Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class ships, but smaller than its Oasis-class ships, with a gross tonnage of 200,000 and guest capacity of around 5,600. There will be more than 1,400 cabins and most will offer ocean views and nearly 90% will offer balconies. Solo cabins are available, as well as beds that reconfigure into a sofa for better use and more space on sea days. For the first time ever for Oceania, the ship will offer a new category of concierge-level staterooms that are designed with solo travelers in mind. Dramatic new “Signature Spaces” offer carefully designed rooms with the idea that there’s a space on the ship for every mood and every purpose.

They'll measure 270 square feet and feature their own balconies, something that is relatively rare for solo cabins on ocean ships. Perhaps the most notable new cruise ship of 2023 will be MSC World Europa, the first of a new series of megaships from MSC Cruises that is designed to go head-to-head with Royal Caribbean's giant Oasis-class ships. The ship accommodates 5,400 guests in double occupancy and up to 6,500 if fully booked. More than 6,000 guests joined her maiden sailing, providing a glimpse into the level of high demand this vessel seems destined to enjoy.

Among lines unveiling new ships that are sisters to vessels already in their fleets are Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Virgin Voyages and Celebrity Cruises. Be sure to stay updated on the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance for cruising. The ship also has an expanded luxury retail space, where guests can indulge in the products of Piaget, Cartier, Bvlgari.

Regent is the cruising equivalent of the hotel world's Four Seasons chain — a brand promising beautiful accommodations, refined food and pampering service. Plus, Norwegian Viva will have The Drop, a 10-story dry slide that Norwegian says offers more G-force than an accelerating Formula One race car. The vessel also will be home to a three-deck theater that converts into a Las Vegas-style nightclub and will host interactive, real-life game shows, including at-sea versions of "The Price Is Right."

The line’s newest ship, Silver Nova, which holds 728 passengers was ranked as the Best New Luxury Ship. This environmentally-friendly ship, which began its inaugural cruise in August, 2023 is the industry’s first hybrid luxury cruise ship. Viking Saturn is practically identical to her sister ships, exuding the same sophisticated charm, with high-end Scandi design.

Fares for seven-night sailings start at $559 per person, not including taxes and fees. The line has a second new ship, the 4,810-passenger MSC Euribia, too, which will debut later in 2023 — in June, if all goes according to plan. At around 182,000 tons, it won't be quite as big as MSC World Europa but will still be one of the biggest cruise vessels in the world.

Ticking off a list of first for Silversea, this ship will the first to feature all-balcony cabins, it will be the largest and most spacious in the fleet and the most environmentally friendly. The next best thing to having your own yacht is setting sail on Emerald Cruises’ second superyacht Emerald Sakara. OK, you will have to share it with other passengers, but that’s hardly a hardship on this sleek vessel which has an infinity pool and marina platform with fun toys including a water trampoline. The family-friendly ship will feature familiar Marella favorites, such as Nonna’s Italian restaurant, plus an all-new Mexican eatery and speakeasy bar. MarellaVoyager will sail in the Mediterranean during the maiden season before relocating to theCaribbean in winter 2023. Unlike many other cruise lines, specialty restaurants are included in the fare and include Italian Manfredi’s, the Chef’s Table with tasting menus and Mamsen’s showcasing Scandinavian fare.

Previously sailing asTUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff Herz, the vessel is being completely renovated ahead of sailingunder its new name. A snow grotto is among the Scandi-cool – quite literally in this case – features you’ll find on board the latest in Viking’s near-identical fleet of ocean ships. For the ultimate bragging rights sailors (as passengers are called) should check out the Mega RockStar suites complete with electric guitars and vinyl turntables. From relaxing on the top deck to exploring ports of call, I hope my 2023 is filled with new adventures at sea on one — or all — of these ships. The same source states that Viking Saturn will embark on journeys around the world, from Europe to the Americas, with starting prices ranging from $3,000 to $14,000.
